Bonnechere is a small gem of a campground in East-Central Ontario. The park acts as a stop for canoe-campers where the winding Bonnechere River drains into Round Lake. Surrounded by old Canadian Shield hills, the lake is very shallow in the park, making the beach extremely safe for children. They will also enjoy the summer kids’ programs runs by the park, while young and old will enjoy the periodic night programs that have included wolf howls and spirit walks. While the sites are not extremely private, everyone is friendly, and radio noise practically non-existent. Transport trucks can be heard early in the morning. Clams can be an issue in the water, so water shoes are recommended if you are susceptible to cuts. Naturalization policies mean the park is not as “tidy” as it used to be, so sometimes the bark debris at one end of the beach is unappealing. Canoeing the river is no problem; however, the lake can change its temper, so be aware. Off-site hikes are good adventures with some great scenery.
My Favourite thing to do here: Canoeing from the river-to-lake at sunrise with gulls, ducks and maybe loons and a beaver nearby.
Camping recommendation: For long stays, an electric site in Tall Pines Campground is great; for short stays, most sites are good to great.
