Lake St. Peter Provincial Park was selected as our summer camping spot because of its proximity to the Ottawa Valley and Algonquin Park. We also thought that it would a quiet destination due to its remoteness. And it did not disappoint.
Nestled just north of the town of Maynooth and Bancroft, and south of Algonquin Park, it is an “off the beaten track” spot with great access to the Lake. We booked two sites for the two families in the campground. The sites were flat, with the standard picnic tables and fire-pits.
There are two beaches, one being the larger more central one with beautiful sand and lots of space to set up chairs, relax or play ball and swim. It definitely is the busier of the two beaches. The second beach is small and not really designed for play, but quiet if that is what you prefer.
Taking the kids hiking was a great family activity! We hiked twice over the 4 days. The first day we completed the shorter trail and the second day, we completed the climb up to the look-out and the trail to the hermit’s cabin which is no longer standing and slowly rotting. Park staff gave us treasure hunt maps for the kids to follow and it kept them busy and interested in locating the treasure such as the cabin and a large old stump.
Comfort stations were clean, campground was quiet and the lake was a great fishing destination. Motor boats are allowed and can be noisy at times depending on the day.
What I liked most about the Park? The larger beach was a great spot for the kids, they could fish away from the swimming area, or play ball as we enjoyed lounging in the chairs under shady trees.
What I liked least about the Park? Not as wooded or private as other Parks.

Lake St. Peter PP is located approx 10 minutes north of the small quaint town of Maynooth, Ontario in the Hastings County district. This small yet well kept park is nestled among cottages that dot Lake St. Peter. There are 65 campsites, with a few handfuls of them being hydro sites. The comfort station is located in the middle of the campground easily accessible from all camp sites, and was nice and clean. The garbage/recycling disposal is also located beside the comfort station. The water filling station and dump station are located across from the park office. The beach area was a decent size and looked to be an enjoyable area during the warmer swimming months. Lake St. Peter is a nice decent size cottager lake that can accommodate canoes and kayaks up to your smaller motorboat and jet skis. Everyone there over the May long weekend was very quiet and friendly. We would recommend this park and will definitely return sometime in the future.
